MEMPLEXTM

MEMPLEXTM is a unique light sensitive photopolymer designed, patented, and manufactured at LPT. The material can be used to record and store information holographically. A single disk of the material the size of a CD can record a Terabit (1000 Gbits) of information.

Unique properties:

Extremely hard (normal handling and cleaning will not scratch it)

It can be made to virtually any thickness and size

Novel processing methods eliminate the need for polishing

Thermal stability beyond 200 C (mp and Tg >200 C) Solvent & moisture resistant

Can be coated (AR, etc.)

Applications include:

Ultrahigh capacity data storage (digital or analog) with readout speeds that are orders of magnitude faster than virtually all serial (bit by bit) techniques.

Telecommunications applications include wavelength filters and optical multiplexers and demultiplexers. There are many other optical filter applications for MEMPLEXTM

Optical Power Limiting Materials and Processes

There are many instances when one would like to protect materials from very intense damaging light without the use of permanent filters. While there are ways to develop materials that respond slowly (adjustable sunglasses, liquid crystal shutters, etc.), there are only a few techniques that work very quickly. A real test of fast optical power limiting (OPL) is when a short intense laser pulse must be stopped. Most laser pulses are less than a few nanoseconds (1 ns = 1 billionth of a second) and can cause damage to most materials - in particular the human eye.

In an effort to protect human vision from laser pulses used in the laboratory or in warfare, LPT is working on novel chemical compositions that have the required time response and will be effective in blocking most of the light.

LPT’s approach is to use Two Photon dyes and organic materials that involve rapid charge transfer leading to enhanced absorption.
